Principal, Director of Sustainability
Anthony Bernheim is nationally recognized for his green building expertise and as a leader in the sustainability movement. He has pioneered integrated sustainable building practices from project inception through post occupancy intended to improve global and human health. His work focuses on high performance projects characterized by energy and resource efficiency, safe and healthy environments and products, and generally striving to be living, regenerative and resilient buildings.
Anthony’s work has transformed projects leading to healthier environments through the study of the relationship of indoor air chemical concentrations to occupant health and the development of project specifications for testing building products for chemical emissions. This work has led to an improved process for third-party certification of building products and has provided the basis for the indoor air quality requirements of the current green building codes and standards.
He is an active board member of the USGBC Northern California Chapter and the Health Products Declaration Collaborative, where he participates on committees working to develop improved standards for healthy communities, buildings and building products. His professional achievements were recognized with the AIA California Council’s 2004 Nathaniel A. Owings Award, the 2009 U.S. Green Building Council Northern California Chapter David Gottfried Special Achievement Award, and the 2012 Breathe California Clean Air Award.

Edward Dean, FAIA, LEED® AP BD+C, Ph.D.
Principal, Director of Zero Net Energy Facility Consulting
Ed Dean is a combination of building scientist, design coach and experienced large-project architect, who has specialized in low-energy building design throughout his professional career. In 2012, the American Institute of Architects elevated him to the AIA College of Fellows, noting that
“Edward Dean has advanced the practice of sustainable architecture on multiple fronts: regulation, education, research, publication and the design of new buildings and renovations that raise the bar for sustainable design and low-energy performance.”
He was initially trained as an applied scientist, receiving a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from U.C. Berkeley, but quickly switched to architecture to focus his work on the design of the built environment and, in particular, the emerging need for low-energy building designs. While on the faculty of the Department of Architecture at U.C. Berkeley, he consulted with the California Energy Commission on new energy standards, worked with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory during the initial development of DOE-1 building energy analysis software and led a generation of architects through concepts of integrated design for low-energy performance.
His later extensive experience in professional practice as lead designer on major projects at nationally recognized firms gives him a realistic understanding of the building industry, its limitations and possibilities. He continues to work and consult on the frontier of low-energy building design as this industry undergoes the required changes to low-carbon and zero-net-energy buildings.

AFFILIATED TEAM MEMBERS
In order to provide the multi-disciplinary expertise in sustainable design and technological innovation for the range of services sometimes desired by our clients, we can utilize our connections with technical specialists, drawing on key experts from our affiliated firms. We have formed these affiliations specifically to ensure that every aspect of the client’s project is addressed with the understanding and skill these complex building issues require. Our affiliated experts are leaders in their specialization areas, well versed with use in practice of both the latest technologies and proven design solutions.
Mechanical Engineering. Our team representative works in an advisory and document review capacity with the project mechanical engineer, providing resource and research information pertinent to the study of systems alternatives, including passive energy systems, indoor air quality, integrated control and data measurement systems and, for deep green buildings, regenerative systems.
Building Science and Energy Modeling. Now an essential specialist on every team involved in the integrated design approach to sustainable buildings, at least one building scientist participates with our team in the early design phases to provide site and climate analysis, as well as to carry out preliminary performance analyses for identified design partis that help the client and the A/E team realistically evaluate early design alternatives and decisions. In later project phases, the building scientist can provide detailed simulation of passive airflows, space daylight levels and whole building energy modeling.
Lighting Design. Our lighting specialist provides outline recommendations for low-power electric lighting design based on the project program requirements and can be utilized for full-service lighting design consultation. In later project phases, the lighting specialist can use a 3-D building model to simulate the light levels and brightness of space surfaces including the effects of daylight.
Electrical Engineering (Electric Power). Our team electrical engineer works in an advisory and document review capacity for all building power and building management systems (BMS), but focuses primarily on renewable energy systems, including solar photovoltaic and wind systems. This essential team specialist also provides consultation on low-energy equipment and new technologies to minimize the plug load demand.
Building Control Systems. With the emergence of new and reliable building control systems to manage the building’s passive energy systems and indoor air quality, our team draws on the expertise of companies developing new technologies for coordinated systems management and building data analytics.
Plumbing Engineer (Water Systems Engineering). Particularly for regenerative buildings, our team includes a specialist in water system engineering to advise and review documentation for building water systems, including gray and black water systems.
Civil Engineer. Another key team specialist is the civil engineer, focusing on the basic issue of sustainable infrastructure for all projects, large and small, in both planning and implementation. While functioning in a strategic planning and design consultation role, our affiliated firm can separately provide civil engineering services in the design of sustainable infrastructure for the client’s project.
Landscape Architect. Similarly, our team includes a leader in sustainable landscape design in the role of design strategizing and design review, as appropriate for a client’s project.
Cost Analysis (Cost Effectiveness Analysis). Recognizing the essential importance of cost on the decision-making process for any client, our team always includes a specialist in cost analysis in order to apply cost metrics to all design options under consideration.
Specifications (Green Specs). Our team includes a specialist in green specifications, key to working within the established building industry, and particularly essential in connection with LEED certification of any project and renewable energy systems.
Commissioning. During the later phases of a project and during the post-occupancy period, our team can include an experienced third-party commissioning agent, who can also provide direction and training during measurement and verification of the building’s performance.
