Commissioned Publication: Zero Net Energy Case StudiesPGE-cover-thumbnail

Client: Pacific Gas & Electric Company. First Edition: December 2012. Second Edition: February 2014.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company commissioned us to produce a monograph of case studies of buildings designed and built to achieve zero-net-energy performance, which have been verified as achieving this goal by a minimum of one year of data collection. The book is an illustrated description of the design approach, the practical issues confronted and solved, and the lessons learned from the post-occupancy energy performance evaluation. The result is a publication that is readily accessible to non-technical readers and still contains detailed technical information useful to the practicing building design professional.  (Learn More)

French-American Schl_thumbnailZero Net Electric Energy School Building for the French-American School, San Francisco, CA

Client: CA Architects, Sausalito CA, and the San Francisco French-American School

We were retained by the architect for this school project to provide building design consulting services toward the goal of zero net electric energy performance (grid neutrality). The 10,000 sq. ft. building complex supports a program of early childhood education (ages 3-5) on an urban site in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. The project incorporates “state of the shelf” components in an advanced design incorporating a range of design strategies for this microclimate and building program. The project is currently under construction, expected occupancy in 2014.  (Learn More)

YCCD thumbnailZero Net Electric Energy Office Building, Yosemite Community College District, Modesto, CA

Client: Darden Architects, Fresno CA, and the Yosemite Community College District

Yosemite Community College District manages two community college campuses in the central San Joaquin Valley of California and requested their architect, Darden Architects of Fresno CA, to design a new 25,000 sq. ft. office building to house their administration functions. The client also established a goal of a building that achieves zero net electric energy (grid neutral) performance. Bernheim + Dean Inc is a consulting member of the design team, providing support and analysis toward this ultimate objective. In spite of the challenges of the central Valley climate, early analysis of the recommended design approaches indicates that the goal of grid neutrality can be achieved. The project is in mid-design (Fall 2013) with construction expected to start in 2014.  (Learn More)

CAEEC Block 225 Lobby-thumbnailCapitol Area East End Complex Block 225, Sacramento, CA

Client: State of California

As the Sustainability Principal for the Design-Build team, Anthony Bernheim led the team in the development of the sustainability program for a large state office building (1,470,200 sq. ft. of office space and 742,625 sq. ft. of parking structures). He developed an integrative and collaborative design process to integrate sustainability into the project, particularly with regard to original work on building product chemical emissions, and helped the team win the design-build competition. WBLstreetview-thumbnailZero Net Energy Public Library, Berkeley, CA

Client: City of Berkeley

Edward Dean led the A/E team in the design of a landmark zero net energy (ZNE) branch library for the City of Berkeley, while engaged as director of the northern California office of an architectural firm. The design of the 10,000 sq. ft. branch library incorporates appropriate design strategies for a small urban site in a marine microclimate and uses the architectural aspects of these strategies to enhance the users’ experience of the space. The daylighting design, in particular, provides a unique spatial character in addition to eliminating most of the normal electric lighting load. The building opened in December, 2013, and is currently undergoing its post-occupancy commissioning. It is fully metered to provide complete performance data for all energy systems during its first years of operation.  (Learn More)

Client: City and County of San Francisco

With the San Francisco Main Library project, completed just prior to the LEED certification process, Anthony Bernheim, in his role as project manager for the architect-of-record, pioneered the early introduction of the design principles for a high standard of Indoor air quality (IAQ) from design through building operation.
